The Best Way To Keep Water Tanks
What has created problems for the many county engineers and painting contractors are the fast expanding suburban areas. During the old times that water tanks in rural areas were placed far from school and from houses by the county commissioners and zoning officials. Currently the population is expanding and many water tanks are now surrounded by residential neighborhoods, causing changes in the method of repainting and maintaining water tanks.
The assistant chief, facility design of the Bureau of Engineering for the Department of Public Works of Anne Arundel County in Maryland, faced this dilemma in 1988. The thing was with this elevated water storage tank it was not only near houses and schools but also had a previous coating of lead based paint. The engineer was recorded to have said that the tank was built in a far place. In the area children were abundant making them decide against open abrasive blasting that could cause airborne paint particles. Instead they looked into more ways to maintain the tank.
The Department of Public Works decided to prepare the tank surface by power washing, followed by an application of DTM or direct to metal enamel. How the next coat of paint was selected was based on its ability to provide good adhesion without lifting the previous coating, good corrosion resistance, long term flexibility, and good gloss and color retention. A few years later the enamel is still protecting the tank, but the coating procedures in Anne Arundel County have changed.
Currently, containment procedures have improved allowing them to use abrasive materials to either bare metal or remove the original prime coat without releasing paint particles into the atmosphere. Slowly the previous coating was removed down to the original primer, and in some cases down to the bare metal making sure not harm came to the people. They saw the previous paint as not dangerous although we contained the paint using tarps and ground cover to avoid inconvenience to residents and to be one the safe side. At the same time the system had surface tolerant sealants and adhesives. Here, based on its adhesion and corrosion resistance properties plus its excellent surface wetting qualities the primer was chosen.
For the intermediate coat, chemical and moisture resistance is needed in a high build coating system. Here it provides a chemical and moisture barrier, and also can be top coated in just 18 hours to 14 days just like the primer. The best temperature to apply the primer and the intermediate coat is at temperatures between 35 degrees F and 120 degrees F at 85 percent relative humidity. The bad weather conditions did not stop the paint job for moving on.
Choosing the top coat meant considering its performance and aesthetic qualities. One color per coat was assigned so that all parts were sure to be covered. The color beige was assigned to the primer. Medium blue was assigned to the top coat while, light blue to the intermediate coat. The total square feet that was coated was about 37,000.
